Playing to win
Evan Luc-Tran claimed the national title for his age group at the inaugural Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee competition in June. As part of his prize which included iPads and books, Evan got to meet the Prime Minister in Parliament House, after restrictions lifted. Evan tested the PM’s spelling abilities by asking him to spell one of the hardest words he had encountered: leukocyte, which means white blood cells. Mr Morrison only got two letters in before Evan jumped in to correct him.
The spelling bee event, which is run by Kids News and News Corp Australia, had 21,000 students from across 490 schools sign up for the first event held in June. Registrations for the next competition are planned to open on July 25 next year.
Evan is on a roll after coming first in Australia for his age group in the Mathletics competition. On the home front, Evan was awarded the Principal’s Gold Award for 2021 in yesterday’s Awards Ceremony.
